letters IV

Dear pdf of Becoming Nikki – Convert thyself to an OpenOffice document, please.  Without costing me $30.

Dear future readers of Becoming Nikki – If you see any typos, please ignore them.  My brother just found a few typos and I can’t correct them because I can’t edit the pdf I have of Nikki.  (Weep, weep, all weep.)  So if you find them… ignore them.  I tried.  And I’ll keep trying.  But if they make it into the print edition… I’m sorry.

Dear Mockingjay: Part One – HOW DARE YOU.  HOW DARE YOU BE SO ACCURATE.  HOW. DARE. YOU.  I think it’d be less painful if I ripped out my heart and stomped on it.  *sigh*  Feels.  (Do you guys want a review of it?  It’ll be mostly sobbing, but I can try to write one if you want to read it…)

Dear The Art of Letting Go – Thank you for being so patient with me.  Nikki is taking over my life right now (I literally just typed “write” instead of “right” – SEE?!), but I promise I’ll finish you sometime soon.

Dear Christmas – I love you.

Dear month of December – I love you, too.

Dear Wonder – Thank you for being such an easy read.  Thank you for being as wonderful the second time around as you were on the first time around.  Thank you for letting me lose myself in your pages.  And I can’t wait to read The Julian Chapter for the first time!!!

Dear Unbroken (movie) – I can’t wait to see you.  I can’t wait to cry unashamedly in the theater.

Dear Becoming Nikki blog tour – Please be as awesome as I think you’re going to be.  Please don’t stress me out.  Please be easy and fun.  PLEASE.

Dear Saturday – PLEASE COME SOON.

Dear Monday – Please don’t come ’til I can get these edits done…

Not-so-dear Math CLEP – I don’t like you, you deceitful little thing.  You’re making me nervous.  Stop it.

Dear sweet tea – Do you come in IV form?

Hanging on for the crazy ride that will be December,

Ashley.

Letters III: NaNo Edition!!!

tumblr_ltn51eouvj1qi4jnro1_500Dear NaNo – You wonderful, hateful creature.  How can you be so awesome, so challenging, and so hated at the same time?  I have a love-hate relationship with you.  And will forever, because I don’t see this relationship ending any time soon.  You helped me write Becoming Nikki last year (or, at least, the first 50,185 words of it), you’re helping me write Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes this year, and I can totally see something next year.  (Perhaps a well-needed rewrite and new beginning for Aaron Schmidt/Reynolds?  We shall see.)

Dear Skip – You are simply the best half-main character anyone could ever ask for.  When I started my first chapter from your point-of-view, I nearly flipped when you told me that you “never considered [yourself] to be of much concern to anyone except [your] parents.”  It was the perfect opening!  After writing this, you told me all the ways that you would endear yourself to my reader.  I believe that’s the first time I fell in love with you.  And I’ve been falling ever since.

Dear Word Count – You evil villain, you.  AH, HA!  That’s it!  This is no Man Versus Man story, nor is it a Man Versus A Greater Power Than Himself (Such As A War) story.  NAY.  This is an Author Versus Word Count story.  You do terrific damage to my characters, forcing them to go through beatings, moves, and the loss of their parents, siblings, mentors, and etc for your own evil purposes!  WITHOUT CEASING!!!  I guess I have to thank you then, because, without you, there would be no story.

Dear Setting – Oh, how I love small towns.  Towns where everybody knows everybody and there aren’t any secrets.  (Well, not many secrets.  MUAHAHAHAHA….)

Dear Plot – Why must you be so complicated and hard to figure out?  And then, the minute I an idea and start writing furiously, why is it that you make me come close to tears – when I don’t normally cry AT ALL while writing?!  HOW DARE YOU.  However, I’m starting to figure you out.  You’re stretching me, and that’s good.  Normally, I write from down on the ground – in the middle of the chaos.  (Which I enjoy.  : D )  You’re telling me to fly up with Ronnie and get the bird’s-eye view.  It’s been enormously enlightening and very helpful – especially when I get stuck and need to look at the whole picture again.  I can’t wait to see the end of this novel.  Then, I’ll know whether to laugh with delight over this epic masterpiece that I have wrought, or to sob and become a chocoholic.  Only time will tell.Flipped

Dear Flipped – Gaaaaaahhhhhh…..  You provide more inspiration than you know!  Even just listening to the music videos – and constantly looking back to see, “Ooh, what’re Bryce and Juli getting into now?” – has been inspiring.  I can definitely see a review of your wonderfulness coming up in the near future.  : )

Dear Snippets Good Enough To Use As Quotes – You’re amazing.  Just… amazing.

[Laura] took Susie’s hands and looked deeply into her eyes.  “Never, ever give up on your dream.  This gift you’ve been given is far too precious to be tossed to the wayside by the thought that you’re not good enough or don’t possess enough talent.”

– Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes

Dear Unnamed TV Show – Golly Pete.  Thanks for introducing yourself to me barely a week before NaNo.  It’s been interesting, all of this, “Okay, thousand-word sprint, then I’ll watch an episode!”  And then there’s the pictures of the actors and characters I have to find and the quotes I have to RANDOMLY COME ACROSS….  *rolls eyes*  You’ve been good to me.  You’ve shown me that, yes, there is some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fightin’ for!!!  (Or, in this case, great shows that deserve to be back on cable.)  (In case any of you were wondering, THE PHANTOM! is the opera ghost.  Uh, haha, not that.  I mean, I didn’t give the name of the show because if I give the name, you’re all bound to look it up and it’ll prove DISASTEROUS for all you NaNoers out there.  Trust. Me.  It’ll come back after NaNo, and I’ll give its name, why it’s so amazing, and why you all should go to YouTube posthaste and watch it.)  This puts me in mind….

Dearest of dearest writing friends who just gave me her novel….  I can’t decide whether to love you or hate you!  It’s like it’s pulling me away from my novel and my characters into someone else’s world – a CONSTANT DISTRACTION!!!  Howevah.  It’s another one of those Thousand-Word Sprint Incentives that I love so dearly, so thank you MUCHLY.  I’ll thank you in my blog post announcing that SaHFS has risen to the number-one spot on the New York Times Bestseller list.  : D

Well.  Enough talking about writing.  Writers write.

Word Count?  Prepare to MEET THY MAKER.

Letters II

Dear church family – You guys are so amazing.  I can’t believe that God has blessed me with such amazing friends!  I thought that when we moved from North Carolina to Georgia that I wouldn’t find anybody even remotely interested in the things I like or who have the same convictions.  Well, whatdya know, it’s only been four years since moving and I can’t decide whether I’m a Georgia Girl or a North Carolina Girl!  (Let’s just say I’m a Southern Girl and leave it at that.)  Honestly, though….  You guys are awesome.  It makes me laugh the things we talk about sometimes….  How our conversation can change from something like The Avengers and Pride and Prejudice to some really deep topics!  I’ve loved getting to know you guys and I hope I’ll know y’all for the rest of my life.

Dear Class of 2013 – Well, we’ve finally done it!!  WOOT!!  Looks like ’13 is our lucky number.  ; )  Congrats to all of you wonderful, wonderful grads.  Looks like we’ll finally be able to say, like Edna, “I never look back, Darling. It distracts from the now.” – Edna Mode, The Incredibles.

Dear Mom and Dad – You guys are The. Best. Parents. Ever.  I now love the broken microwave to bits and pieces because, even though it has duct tape holding the handle onto it, it means that you found a way around getting a new one, which gave you the means to give me the best graduation present ever.  LOVE YOU!!!!

Dear Pixar People – Thank you for making the effort to stay family-friendly!  I had the best pre-graduation party a girl could ask for the other day when all of my friends graduating with me, plus a few other people, went to see Monsters University.  It was awesome and we enjoyed it.

Dear Richard Armitage – The other day, I saw a quote from you that said: “I don’t think actors need to go on pedestals.  I don’t buy it.  I think it’s a weird thing.  It’s like you become someone else, like stepping into another universe.”  Why do you have to be so awesome?!

Dear Hardy Boys TV show from the ’70’s – B’HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Dear Faramir – Sighhhhh….  I don’t know why people don’t like you.  You’re overshadowed by more handsome men, I guess….  If only people could see that it’s what’s inside that counts!!  If they knew that, how could they read a quote like, “I would not use the Ring.  Not if Minas Tirith were falling in ruin and I alone could save her.” and NOT LIKE YOU?!  You are and forever will be my favorite character in the LOTR trilogy.

Dear Aaron Tveit – If you cut your hair out of sympathy and support for the crew member of Graceland who had cancer, I renounce all of the mean things I said about you when I first heard that you cut your hair.  If not, well….  Either way, please don’t cut it that short ever again!!

Dear Unwritten Community Story – Why must you be so hard on me?  I’m trying to write you and, so far, you’ve failed to give me so much as a plot to go off of!  All I have is characters and a setting!!  I need more.  I have to write!  Please.  Help me.  You’re my only hope.

Dear Penelope – I love you.  That is all.

Dear Blog Readers – You will all be eternally jealous of me when I say this, but….

Here’s the official announcement of what The Graduation Gift To End All Graduation Gifts is.  For my graduation, I got a ton of money to spend on something “very special” from my grandparents on my dad’s side, then a suitcase from my mom’s mom, then a luggage tag and bag from my parents that read, ‘Go Places, See Stuff.’

Well.  I opened the luggage tag and bag, read what it said aloud, and my mom asked, “Would you like to go places and see stuff?”  I could only reply, “Yeah….”  (After all, this was at midnight-thirty, after being at my grandparents’ for a week, then moving rooms from upstairs to downstairs with Jellybean – WOOT! – then cleaning, then rehearsing, then graduating, then having a swing dance….pictures to follow, btw….)

Then, my dad said….

CUE EPIC MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!

“You and I are going to New York to see a Broadway Show.”

GAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!  DSHDIEPP;;SGHKWNPGISNJALKFHGPBJSNDAMGSKBLNASFNLGMJAIDBGS;ND/BOPSI!!!!!

Yes, it’s true, dear readers!!  I’M GOING TO BROADWAY!!!  IN LESS THAN A MONTH!!!!!

24 days, to be exact.

SO EXCITED!!!!

So.  Yeah.  Totally excited.

What shall I be seeing, you ask?  Well.  We’re going to be there two days (actually, we’re going to be gone from July 30th thru August 2nd, but we’re allowing two days for travel), so I said, “Hey, Dad.  We’ll be there two days.  We can see two shows!!”  Muahahahahaha…..

Turns out, the Special Money To Spend On Something Very Special from my grandparents was for one of the shows, so I only have to pay for one.  WOOT!  (Third time I’ve said that in one blog post.  *nods*  I’m a little crazy.)

Enough with the chatter!  I’ll be seeing Wicked and Cinderella.  ON BROADWAY.  Totally a dream come true.  (Time to find a new dream, eh, Flynn?)

So, yeah.  I’m more than a little excited.  Ecstatic, actually.  : )

I’ll also be seeing the sights a little, which is going to be fun!  I’ve also gotten orders to see specific places, get souvenirs for my siblings, and call certain friends and family from Times Square.

Needless to say, there will be much NYC posting and pictures GALORE and musical gushing and randomness going on over the next month or so.  So be forewarned.

I signed up for Camp NaNo this month, but, lolz, we’ll see how that goes.  We’ve been finishing out our basement over the last few months, and during the past week, I’ve done more painting, grouting, and back-breaking than I’ve done in my LIFE.  My fingers, fingernails, arms, legs, face, and hair has so much paint in it….  Insane.  *rolls eyes*  But I’m having fun.  Having to charge up my little 2gig shuffle every night so I can listen to the Little Women musical every day while I work.  Fun!  : )  Anyway, that’s what I’ve been doing.  Lack of posting flows out of that.  Terribly sorry!  Howevs.  I know my friends will get tired of me talking about my EPIC TRIP!!! so often, so I’ll be posting about it on here.  A LOT.

So I guess I’ll see you guys later.  : D

AMEN FOR NNNNNYYYYYYYCCCCCC!!!

Letters

Dear Anne-girl….  Thank you so much for this week’s Scribblers’ Conference!!  It’s been so amazing and I can’t wait to start writing again – I’ve been insanely busy this week, so my writing is basically zip.  : P

Dear David Tennant… You are amazing and I can’t wait to watch more of Doctor Who!  I already know a ton of quotes from the show and am constantly scaring my dad because of them.  (Don’t worry, Dad….  I’m not going to go crazy.)

Dear Thea…. I miss you SO MUCH!!!  And I’m insanely jealous of you and can’t wait to hear all about how amazing Italy was!!  Hearing stuff from your sister is great, but I feel like I’m missing out on details.  And that new job getting paid to go shopping and teach a girl English….  Wow.  (Thou shalt not covet! THOU SHALT NOT!!!)  The kids you’re nannying for are adorable and I can hardly imagine how hard it’ll be for you to come back!!  Skyping with you the other day was amazing and I loved seeing the kids – Giacomo is SO CUTE!!!

Dear August Rush….  You are an amazing movie!!!  (Minus a few scenes….)  And your soundtrack is phenomenal, especially August’s Rhapsody and Raise it Up!  Oh, and I can’t fail to mention the one that my littlest brother loves watching… the guitar-slapping song.  And August/Evan… you are so adorable.  Cutest little boy ever… and every time I see a picture of you, I’m struck by the fact that you look almost exactly like a friend of mine when he was younger.  : )  Also, I can never thank you enough for providing me with an actor to cast as Alec!!  (Now to find my main character….)

Dear The Avengers….  You were a good movie – via ClearPlay, that is.  (Dear ClearPlay – YOU ARE AMAZING!!!)  I now have a love-hate relationship with Tony Stark and a LOVE-LOVE relationship with Captain America, mainly because of this.  I also think that Banner was the deepest character.  And I officially think that Hawkeye is cooler than Legolas.  (In your face, Legolas fans!!)

Dear gluten-free apple pie….  Sighhhh.  You are bliss in gluten-free form.  My intestines thank you.

Dear Nikki and Alec….  Sorry I’ve had to leave you guys in a car driving thirty minutes for the past week or so….  The author is busy and promises to get you to your destination very soon!!!

Dear theory test on Saturday….  Why must you be so early and so far away?  Why must you scare me with your grading system?!  Why must you taunt me with a 98% the first time, then an 80% the second?!!  (True, the second was probably more my fault than yours….  I went skiing with some friends the two days before and got home at 2am, then woke up at 7:30ish….  Yup, it was my fault.)  Just please be nice on Saturday.  No D# melodic minor scales, I beg you!!  I’ll have to console myself with a Starbucks Java Chip… and last time I had one, it didn’t end well.  : (

Dear sweet little brother….  I’m sorry you’re sick.  : (  It’s so sad to see the sweetest little bundle of personality feel bad.  You sat down and watched “Some Brides for Some Brothers” today and looked so pitiful….  Poor dear.  I’m so glad you like musicals, by the way.  Your future wife will appreciate that.
(And along those lines….)

Dear younger brother….  Please don’t talk about Jane Fairfax around girls who aren’t related to you.  Likening my younger sister reading a letter from a friend to the way Mrs. Bates reads a letter from Jane is awesome, but not around other girls.  Please.  I beg of you.

Dear Senior Year….  You are amazing and I love you to death.  Thank you for being you and shining a light at the end of this tunnel.  : D

Dear bloggy friends….  Thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog.  Half the time, I don’t know if anyone’s reading it, but then I hear from someone or someone comments and it makes my day.  Thank you SO MUCH!!!

(Last because it’s the most important….)

Dear adorable little kids we just heard about….  I am praying for you!!!  Hopefully, if it’s God’s will, I’ll meet you guys soon.  : )  (Goodness, I’m tearing up.)
