nikki or daniella?

Hey, guys!  Putting myself out on a limb here because I’ve never really written a post just to ask you guys a question… mainly because I’m not sure how many people read/care about my blog…

ANYWAY.  For the tens and tens of people who do read/care about my blog, I have a question to ask of you.  Next month, I’ll be participating in Camp NaNo, attempting to write the first 50k words of my new novel, tentatively entitled Daniella.  (There will come a day when my titles stray from girls’ names…. but it is not this day!)  I’ve already started it – 1,433 words in at the moment – because I’m going to be gone practically all day tomorrow.  My heart is already pounding and I’m already feeling like Daniella is going to be ah.mazing.

On a related note, some of you may have heard that Beautiful People is back!  YAY!!!  I’ve loved doing BP for a few of my stories and I can’t wait to do it again!

This is what I’m here to ask you guys about.  (Dun, dun, duuuuuuun…)  For the June and July Beautiful People, would you guys like to hear about Becoming Nikki or Daniella?  I just finished editing Nikki (yesterday – woot!), but I’m going to be neck-deep in Daniella.  Soooo…  The choice is up to you guys.  I’m hoping to do an end-of-the-week recap of Camp NaNo every Friday or Saturday (or Sunday), which would be all about Daniella, but I also want to do some promo stuff for Nikki, as it’s probably going to get published sometime in the early Fall.  (Again -WOOT!)  (Side note – I’m asking because I’d like some advice in this area.  I don’t want to be one of those writer-bloggers who gives vague mentions of equally-vague novels, but I don’t want to be one of those writer-bloggers who is constantly in your face about how awesome her novels are…  Any ideas?)

So.  Becoming Nikki or Daniella?

Beautiful People: Nathan

79abd28d11be8d1b56a8805af08c6bdcNathan Carter is the third of the characters from Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes who I’ll be featuring on my blog, and one of the four characters through whose eyes I write.  Nathan is the “new arrival” in town, having just moved to Brandenburg from somewhere in Kentucky.  Like everyone in his family, he’s a little shy at first, but then becomes close friends with Ronnie and Skip, changing their little band from The Dynamic Duo to The Terrific Trio.  He’s a writer, a thinker, and an aspiring journalist.

1.  What type of laugh does he have?  A joyful, carefree, yet mature one.

2.  Who is his best friend?  Ronnie and Skip.

What is his family like?  His mother died about a year before the story starts, he has a kind father, sweet younger sister (Susie May), and adorable little sister (Dottie).

4.  Is he a Christian, or will he eventually find Jesus?  He’s a Christian, and Jesus is the foundation of his life.  : )

5.  Does he believe in fairies?  I don’t think so.

Does he like hedgehogs?  Ummmm…..  Yes?

7.  Favorite kind of weather?  Rain.  He says it’s the best writing weather.

8.  Does he have a good sense of humor? If so what kind? (Slapstick, wit, sarcasm, etc.?)  He’s not very humorous, but he does enjoy humor.

How did he do in school, or any kind of education he might have had?  He’s very good in school.  Not top of the class, but not scraping by, either.

10.  Any strange hobbies?  Would you call writing strange?

Now, there’s a fun word.  When used as a noun, it means an intoxicated person.  This is probably what the two boys standing in front of Nathan, awkwardly holding out their hands, thought of him.

‘What a way to make a first impression,’ Nathan thought as he shook each of their hands in turn.

“I’m Timothy Jones,” one of them said, “but everyone calls me Skip.  It’s a pleasure.”

Nathan shoved his hands in his pockets.  “Mind if I ask what you’re doing?”

“Organizing the Kellys’ record collection by composer.  Care to join me?”

“Uh, no thanks.” Nathan took a step backwards. ‘Organizing records?  Who does that?’  He decided to be a little wary of Skip in the future.

Beautiful People: Skip

86888a7b8738ff02d4a39da6b48d58b5Timothy “Skip” Jones is the second of the characters from Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes who I’ll be featuring on my blog, and one of the four characters through whose eyes I write.  Skip has been Ronnie’s best friend since forever, and enjoys doing a wide variety of things.  Currently, he’s learning to play the violin.  He also has a leg condition that keeps him from being as active as Ronnie, but he makes up for it by being a million times smarter than Ronnie.  (And he enjoys letting Ron know.)

1. How old is he?  At the beginning of Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes, he’s fifteen.

What does he do with his/her spare time?  His hobbies, which he is constantly amending.  Right now, he’s interested in films and the violin.

3. Does he see the big picture or live in the moment?  He sees the big picture.  He’s definitely not one to dwell in the moment.

4. Is he a perfectionist?  ABSOLUTELY.

5. What does his handwriting look like? (round, slanted, curly, skinny, sloppy, neat, decorative, etc.)  He doesn’t have time to see how nice his handwriting is!  When he wants to write down something – whether it’s an idea or homework – he’s always trying to get the idea down or get it done so that he can move on to the next thing.

6. Favorite animal?  Anything that doesn’t smell, shed, or need feeding.

7. Does he have any pets?  No.

8. Does he have any siblings? How many? Where does he fit in?  Skip is an only child.  (Poor lad!)  However, he has kind of an adopted sister who is a refugee from London.  (She kinda snuck up on me.  She’s doing a lot of unplanned things right now, but I’m enjoying the challenge.)

9. Does he have a ‘life verse’ and if so what is it?  No, but if he did, I think it’d be Matthew 6:34.

10. Favorite writing utensil?  A pen!

“Come on, Skip,” Ronnie said, standing up.  “Lucy May’s older brother will get to know you, too, and-”

Susie May’s older brother, you mean?”

“Details, Timothy Jones the Gentleman, details.”  Ronnie turned on the pleading eyes. “I’ll get down on my knee again if you don’t say yes.”

Skip looked down at his feet.  He had a slight inclination to go, but the real reason he didn’t want to was because it was one thing to be an extrovert around one girl, and it was another matter entirely to be talkative around a whole family of new people he didn’t know.  A mother, a father, and three children?  No, siree.

Skip sighed.  “I’ll ask Mother.”

Beautiful People: Ronnie

David Topp2Ronnie Kelly is the first of the characters from Sneakers and Hot Fudge Sundaes who I’ll be featuring on my blog, and one of the four characters through whose eyes I write.  He’s arguably the “main character,” as readers will first identify with him, because the first chapter is written from his perspective.  He’s an early riser, but only because he has to toss newspapers before school.  His best friend is Skip Jones, but he’s also good friends with Nathan Carter.  Ronnie dreams of being a pilot someday and provides most of the comedic relief.  : )

  1. What is their full name?  Ronald Webster Kelly.

  2. Does his or her name have a special meaning? Other than the fact that I liked it better than Dave?  No, not really.

  3. Does your character have a methodical or disorganized personality?  A little of both.  He’s organized when he wants to be.  His mind is very organized, but his room isn’t.

  4. Does he or she think inside themselves more than they talk out loud to their friends? (more importantly, does he or she actually have friends?) Yes, he has a lot of friends.  (He’s quite a popular guy at Apple Valley High.)  And, no, he definitely talks more than he thinks. (There’s a certain scene I’m thinking of right now….  *nods*  Yep, he definitely talks more than he thinks.  The former almost always comes before the latter.

  5. Is there something he or she is afraid of? Yeah.  He’s afraid of being alone.  He’s so used to having Skip and Nathan around that he feels awkward whenever they’re not there. He’s also afraid of snakes.

  6. Does he or she write, dream, dance, sing, or photograph? Gracious, no!  He tosses newspapers, plays baseball, and dreams of being a pilot.

  7. What is his or her favorite book? (or genre of books) Books about baseball and flying.

  8. Who is his or her favorite author and/or someone that inspires him or her? Jim Parker.  : )

  9. Favorite flavor of ice cream?  He really enjoyed the jalepeno ice cream he made at The Cream of the Crop that one time….

  10. Favorite season of the year?  Fall – it’s his birthday’s season!

A few hours later, he dashed out of the school’s main doors with the other students and shouted, “Freedom!” He ran down the steps, turned around, stood tall and straight, and saluted the school.

“Well, it’s been good knowing you, Apple Valley High,” Ronnie said, as solemnly as he could.  “I’m off to spring break, so I won’t see you for another week or so.  Do me a favor and get burned down, will you?  Thanks.  You’ve been a real pal.”

With that, he hopped on his bike and was off to his father’s store.
